Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Chinese new media art has become a highly visible cultural landscape in the world. To understand this current genre, we need to explore it on two levels: theoretical thinking and concrete criticism. We believe that in the media system of art, apart from linguistic symbols, there are also carriers, products, technologies, media (institutions), etc. Technology is a dimension of media that does not exist alone, but is a force that permeates symbols, carriers, and products, and it is the overall operation of the media system that allows the meaning of art to be generated. New media art means that digital technology permeates all levels of art, including language symbols, carriers, products, and media, and produces new genres with the overall operation of the media system. It was not until the introduction of the international Internet into China in the 1990s that Chinese new media art embarked on a rapid development track. After 30 years of development, Chinese new media art is now showing a diversified direction of elite and mass, broadcast and narrow-cast, privatization and publicization. We are here to continue our technical analysis and aesthetic exploration of the phenomenal Chinese new media art and deepen our understanding and reflection on it.
