Special Issue Information

In our journal Advances in Modern Agriculture, a special issue is calling for papers about organic farming.

Organic farming is an agricultural system that uses fertilizers of organic origin such as compost manure, green manure, and bone meal and places emphasis on techniques such as crop rotation and companion planting. It originated in the early 20th century as a response to rapidly changing farming practices. Certified organic farming accounts for 70 million hectares worldwide, more than half of which are in Australia.

Today, many organizations continue to develop organic farming. Biological pest control, mixed cropping and the fostering of insect predators are encouraged. Organic standards are designed to allow the use of naturally occurring substances while prohibiting or strictly limiting synthetic substances. For instance, naturally occurring pesticides such as pyrethrin are permitted, while synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are generally prohibited. Synthetic substances that are allowed include, for example, copper sulfate, elemental sulfur and Ivermectin. Genetically modified organisms, nanomaterials, human sewage sludge, plant growth regulators, hormones, and antibiotic use in livestock husbandry are prohibited. Advocates of organic farming claim advantages in terms of sustainability, openness, self-sufficiency, autonomy and independence, health, food security and food safety.

In this issue, we sincerely invite scholars to submit articles on organic farming. Potential topics are suggested but are not limited to crop monitoring tech, pros and cons of organic farming, organic farming products, organic farming markets and the challenges met in organic farming.
