Special Issue Information

In our journal Cardiac and Cardiovascular Research, a special issue is calling for papers about cardiac and cardiovascular medications.

Physicians today have an arsenal of medications waiting to be prescribed to help the patients battle against cardiovascular disease. The types of medication patients received depend on their diagnosis, other conditions they have, as well as their ages and lifestyles. There are several most common cardiovascular medications: 

1, Aspirin. It was first discovered to have cardiovascular benefits in the 1960s. Aspirin is the most common antiplatelet agent to prevent blood clots and can keep arteries open and reduce inflammation. 

2, ACE inhibitors and ARBs. Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors prevent the body from producing the artery-constricting hormone angiotensin. Further, arteries are relaxed, and blood pressure is lower. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) also function by restraining angiotensin, then dilating or widening blood vessels. These drugs are often prescribed for high blood pressure and heart failure. 

3, Anticoagulants. They are known as blood thinners, such as warfarin (Coumadin), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), dabigatran (Pradaxa) and apixaban (Eliquis). They help prevent blood from coagulating or clotting and are often taken by patients who suffer from heart attacks or atrial fibrillation. 

4, Beta-blockers. They are beta-adrenergic blocking agents, such as carvedilol (Coreg), nebivolol (Bystolic), and metoprolol (Toprol). They minimize the effects of harmful substances produced as a result of heart failure and assist to improve the hearts pumping blood ability. Beta-blockers even have the potential to participate in cancer treatment.

5, Calcium channel blockers. They are also known as calcium antagonists or calcium blockers, such as Amlodipine (Norvasc), verapamil (Verelan) and diltiazem (Cardizem). Calcium blockers decrease the hearts workload by interrupting the movement of calcium into the cells of the heart and blood vessels, then increasing the supply of blood and oxygen.

6, Cholesterol-Lowering Medications. This type of medication includes statins, nicotinic acids, cholesterol absorption inhibitors, and combination statin and cholesterol absorption inhibitors. They lower bad low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. 

        In this special issue about cardiac or cardiovascular medications. The following topics are suggested but not limited to: side effects of heart medication, alphabetical list of heart medications, over-the-counter heart medication, heart medications for irregular heartbeat, new heart medications, advance in heart medications. All languages and scholars from all countries are welcome.
