Dear colleague,
Understanding the urban landscape pattern has become one of the most promising disciplines in urban planning and landscape design, ecosystems and biodiversity conservation, climate change, land cover change and sustainable development. Past and recent research has proved that landscape patterns in terms of spatial configuration and composition exert important influence on specific ecological processes like air pollution, climate change, traffic flows, urban thermal variations in urban landscapes. For instance, 3D landscapes metrics derived from Airborne Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) and Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) data can used to detect the vertical landscape structures and distribution patterns of buildings and trees in urban areas. With these tools, planners can visualize the future and pattern of urban areas (compact versus dispersed) and make more informed decisions that lead to sustainable, smart, inclusive, healthy, safe, and resilient cities.
